What is Parenting Coordination?

Parenting coordination is a specialized dispute resolution process designed to help separated or divorced parents effectively co-parent and make decisions regarding their children. This approach is particularly beneficial when high-conflict situations arise, and parents struggle to communicate and collaborate on matters related to their children's well-being. Parenting coordinators are trained professionals who work with parents to minimize conflict, improve communication, and ensure the best interests of the children are prioritized.

It's important to note that parenting coordination is often

Key Features Include:

  1. Conflict Resolution: Parenting coordinators assist parents in resolving conflicts related to parenting issues. They facilitate communication, help identify common ground, and work towards practical solutions that benefit the children.

  2. Decision-Making Support: In situations where parents have difficulty making joint decisions, a parenting coordinator can provide guidance and help the parents reach agreements on issues such as visitation schedules, education, healthcare, and extracurricular activities.

  3. Mediation and Facilitation: Parenting coordinators often act as mediators, guiding parents through discussions and helping them find common ground. They facilitate communication to ensure that both parents have an opportunity to express their concerns and contribute to decision-making.

  4. Implementation of Court Orders: Parenting coordinators may assist in implementing court orders related to parenting plans. They work to ensure that both parents understand and adhere to the terms outlined in legal agreements.

  5. Education and Coaching: Parenting coordinators may provide education and coaching to parents on effective co-parenting strategies. This can include guidance on communication skills, conflict resolution techniques, and ways to minimize the impact of parental conflict on children.

  6. Monitoring and Reporting: In some cases, parenting coordinators have the authority to monitor and report on compliance with court orders. They can provide feedback to the court about the parents' cooperation and adherence to the agreed-upon parenting plan.

  7. Child-Centered Approach: The primary focus of parenting coordination is the well-being and best interests of the children. Parenting coordinators work to create parenting plans that prioritize the children's needs and ensure they have a stable and supportive environment.  As I like to say, the goal of parenting coordination is to ensure that "what's best for the child(ren) is what rises to the top."

It's important to note that parenting coordination is often court-ordered in situations of ongoing high conflict, and the parenting coordinator's role is to assist in managing and resolving disputes rather than acting as a therapist. The goal is to provide a structured and supportive process for parents to navigate co-parenting challenges and make decisions that promote the welfare of their children.
